THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE BUDAPEST-BAMAKO
When we set out to create this rally our aim was to make sure that ally types of amateurs with all kinds of vehicles should be able to compete. This is not a timed race where the fastest car wins. The Budapest-Bamako is about navigation, driving technique, endurance and nerves. This is a marathon distance off-road rally where drivers and navigators have to use their car and their brain to win. The winning team has to be great at navigating, driving and solving all types of expected and unexpected problems.
POINT RACE AND ADVENTURE
This is a point race competition. Every day you have to drive from point A to point B and find navigational GEO points between the two. Sometimes you have to drive through the point. Sometimes you have to find a hidden clue or treasure at the point. Some of them are indicated with GPS coordinates and some are not. There are points that you can only find with human intelligence using intel from friendly locals. This is Dakar meets The Amazing Race. There are points that can only be collected by the first three teams that get there. You have to be resourceful and creative every day. A few years ago we painted a sign by the Gambia River. The only problem was that the point was not accessible by car since it was on the wrong side of the river. The more resourceful teams figured out that the only way to get to the point is rent a small canoe from a neighboring village and paddle across the river. They ended up seeing crocodiles and hippos in the Gambia.
WHY IS IT BETTER TO BE IN RACING?
There is no doubt that the racing category is more exciting and more fun. You can not only dash through stunning offroad stages, but you’ll get to see some breathtaking natural beauty that is not accessible to other teams on the rally. The competitive spirit, the personal challenge and the constant adrenalin elevates the thrill level to epic heights. In spite of the rivalry there’s a great sense of community among racers on the rally.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
Every day starts with morning orientation around 7AM. Race organizers point out the dangers and changes for the day. Teams receive a paper based work sheet which contains the day’s navigational checkpoints. You’re free to set your course between the points as you wish. The navigator should enter the day’s points into a GPS. The race is tracked by our own Bamako Race Control device the logs your every move and transfers the data to our server at each camp. Each day is long and challenging. The navigator’s job is to make sure that you drive the least amount and reach the most amount of geo points.
