The 2022 edition of the Budapest-Bamako is postponed to October 21, 2022

The 2022 edition of the Budapest-Bamako is postponed to October 21, 2022

Morocco’s state of emergency and border closures block the March start of the rally.

February 1st, 2022- The Budapest-Bamako Rally set to start from Budapest on March 18, 2022 has been postponed to October 21, 2022 amid the state of emergency declared by host country, Morocco. “After much evaluation we were left with no choice, but make this decision with a very heavy heart.”, said Andrew G. Szabo, director of the largest trans-Saharan rally.

Organizers informed participants and other host countries about the postponement of the event. The rally was supposed to travel through Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Participants were informed about the unfortunate development via email today: “We are in daily contact with the authorities in Rabat, so that we can put on an event that runs smoothly and is in compliance with all local rules. However, they still cannot guarantee that the borders will be opened or that our permits will be issued in time. In order to keep the 2022 rally under optimal logistical conditions, to spare you from losing any money, and to ensure your maximum Budapest-Bamako experience, we are forced to postpone this year’s race to October 21-November 8, 2022.”

“These are difficult times and Covid-19 has been changing plans for the past two years. It is becoming clear that we have to synchronize our rallies with Covid wave patterns around the world”, said Mr. Szabo.

The Budapest-Bamako is a 9400 kilometer trans-Saharan rally with over 700 participants from from 40 countries.
